I’ve started having to get him to empty his pockets to prove he’s got his wallet before we go out of the door. I think, at 38 years, he’s lived in Yorkshire too long.

Reminds me of the time I came to the boat with some Tupperware boxes I’d got out of the freezer at home. I thought I was having leek and parsnip soup for tea, but it was stewed apple. She sounds a real character. 1
MargeandParge
We've never had hardship or rationing in our lives but if we had it would make us think the same way as those that came before us. Neither Marge or myself waste any resources. Kindest Regards Marge and Parge
TheQ
If your use by date started before July 1958, then you have experienced rationing as the final WW2 rationed item was freed then , that was coal.. Until 4th July 1954 there was still meat rationing.. Until the 1980s cheese production was deliberately limited by HMG, but what was produced not rationed .

I can just remember the rationing and I have still got my ration card, somewhere in a box. My mother kept 200 chickens in runs in the wood on the island, with a licence to sell the eggs to the "Min. of Ag. and Fish."

Hylander
Speaking of Mums mine passed in 2016, when clearing her house, the third bedroom under the bed we found jar upon jar of jam from the 1970s. It was good enough to tarmac the road with. Perhaps we should have kept them and used them to fill the pot holes outside in the road.
BroadAmbition
Talking of pot holes, in this country we used to drive on the left, now we drive on what's left of the road Griff 1
addicted
I can just remember when meat came off rationing. my nan, who lived with us, took me shopping and we stood outside the butchers and she told me to look in the window and pick anything I wanted and I could have it. It was a big event. I remember I chose a lamb chop! Carole

Gracie - I don't know why you did the "laughing" reaction - that is probably a normal everyday mealtime in your household by the sound of it

Meantime
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what chicken puffs are I thought maybe they were similar to cheese puffs, but they are a savoury snack, and I cannot for the life of my think why you'd put them in a freezer. Gracie, I have the perfect oven for you. My boat oven has gone faulty and won't go above gas mark One. Your family would thank me for it, if you want it.

Regulo
My friend Rene's mum kept chickens in her garden back in the 50's, but couldn't kill one when the time came. So she carried it down to the local butchers at the bottom of the road, who would do the necessary, and then walk back with the deceased and pluck and prepare it for the pot. Was different in those days, I can't see the local Morrisons butcher welcoming a woman with a live chicken under her arm, asking him to despatch it! 1
MauriceMynah
As we are unable to reply to BA notices, dare I bring to the mods attention that in the latest one, there is reference made to a link but it seems not to exist
Bikertov
The link worked for me, although is is not a clickable "hyperlink" I copy/pasted it into a browser Copied here for convenience, as a hyperlink Temporary partial closure of Repps Bank 24hr mooring due to refurbishment works https://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/boating-news/temporary-partial-closure-of-repps-bank-24hr-mooring-due-to-refurbishment-works 1
grendel
Seems to me a bad time to be closing a large portion of the only mooring in potter Heigham.

Not to mention the recently announced closure of Fleet Dyke, Rockland for dredging work, which may well impact the moorings on Short Dyke. I can well imagine that additional traffic using it to access Rockland Broad will make mooring there a less than peaceful place. I think we can all understand that the weather over the autumn and winter impacted some works, but surely some better planning could have been exercised here to space these repairs out. I don’t think any of us want to be accused of BA bashing, but so many of their decisions seem to not be in favour of the boating community. marshman
Blame it on the Bure Hump - difficult to do much on moorings under water!!! Don't forget as well that most of the work is done by contractors and they have schedules themselves but never mind, as many of you have been predicting the imminent collapse of the boating industry, whose going to be left to use them?
