diastar
I stand corrected. Just know could have been a bit hairy if the Richardson's boat had got much further
Chelsea14Ian
I think there are a few around this weekend, this afternoon we were heading down the cut on our way back to Brundall. There was a large hire boat trying to turn around, going past the marker posts. As we got close I sounded the horn, and toad them to stay inside the past incase you get stack. They replied we are not novices,we know what we are doing.Perhaps its something in the water. Boaters
Several years ago we were standing on the Quay down steam from the Lydia Eva we watched as three Barnes craft being escorted back up river by the pilot boat and the BA launch and apparently having been turned back not that far from the harbour limits. They had gone down on the ebb but were struggling to get back under the Haven Bridge ! You would have thought the sight of the very large moored ships would have given them the clue that they were going in the wrong direction. ( have some pics I will try and post )
Boaters
Be fair the sign is only the size of a double decker bus !
ChrisB
If you go on the Norfolk Live web cam page and then the Salthouse Hotel (Ipswich). A certain lady called Debbie is asking if hire boats are allowed to moor there!!!!
JawsOrca
After what we saw in two weeks this sadly doesn't surprise me... although I am surprised they didn't try and go across the channel for a trip to france..
LondonRascal
I know we can all say 'how could they do that' and that sign saying no hire craft beyond this point is pretty big let us not forget - but I have for some time wondered about how well it's message is delivered. It is big, yellow and has black writing on it but it is over to the right of the river almost like some liked of billboard. If you did not look that way you may miss it - Or it might be so big and obvious you don't take it in as refering to 'you' and the area you are heading to. I think two red bordered signed on the Haven Bridge simple saying "No Hire Craft - Turn Back" would be clearer and more akin to a formal road sign which would, to most be more habitual to see and react to.

Hylander
A boat similar to the one outside The Wherry on this glorious July morning. Just a thought, may be they were heading for the sun they could see in the dim and distance, it certainly isnt in Norfolk or Suffolk at the moment. Robin you are assuming that these folk can read. In fairness may be they were from abroad, we get a lot of folk from the continent over here on holiday.
Oddfellow
Nevertheless, how daunting must it be to cruise past such a large ship? AND, were they not asking themselves a few questions?
Mark
Given the potential language issue maybe it would be easier to have a couple of large picture signs on the Bure approach to Gt Yarmouth simply showing a Cruiser in a circle with a red line through it for a left turn and a green one showing a right turn. Same principle could also apply for coming over Breydon

Sign at Haven bridge is way to late, if you think the flow through Yarmouth is strong you should try it through Haven Bridge. A diagram at the Helm would help but surely in this day and age you could fit a radio transmitter on the quayside and have a really loud alarm and flashing lights in the boat if you go past it. LondonRascal
I think Mark has cracked it! Yes some simply pictogram to inform people – boat with arrow to go around yellow post, another with a line through the boat in picture as Mark said where the ‘no hire boats past this point’ sign is. You could even use them to be attached to every second or third channel marker post ‘keep this side’. Here are some the Broads Authority can use.. They can then go to this site to get them made up for mounting and
Gracie
Unbelievable, you would have thought that big old ship would have been a bit of a give away Can you imagine the conversation........husband at the helm calls over to wife, points at big ship " The size of these ruddy hire boats nowadays, can you imagine how much that would cost to hire?" lol Grace
Hockham Admiral
I'm not too sure that any number of signs will deter some of our poor misguided old (or young) dears.................
