Has The Nbn Got A Future? A resounding "Yes"!

Did someone mention a "Jimmy Choo section", get's my vote, as for me being Queen, I couldn't possibly, one has far too many commitments lol

Seriously though, this forum is priceless, I am not a techy but I would gladly donate if it helps in any way. The response to this thread from members just goes to show the depth of feelings we have for this forum. Well done Skipper and Team, I hope you come up with a solution very soon

p.s  If you will excuse me, I'm just off to walk the Corgi's. By the way, what does one do with a lump hammer? :naughty:

What this forum provides is sincerity above all else. The absence of pretence, deceit, or hypocrisy.

We are what we are. Some will try and undermine our values.

They return from whence they came.

Summed up perfectly Andrew!

'Other' sites may boast of 'thousands of members' but how many of those are active ?

It would appear that many are still counted but have absolutely NO intention of EVER contributing again.  I am one such 'member' - I know I'm not alone!

I find it sad that some would seek to undermine the NBN in this way .

At some time or other I think we have all been members of several Broads based forum, these all give different angles on the same theme. The main thing is that there are places that lovers of the Broads and boating in general can visit to offer advice, share stories of their times on the rivers and broads.

Please do not knock the other forums we are bigger than that.

Regards

Alan

I think it is a great shame that Faceache appears to be inflicting damage on a large number of traditional sites. These range across many leisure sectors, not just Boat Owners Associations but cars, bikes, flying etc.

I can see many sites disappearing and with them loads of useful information and history built up over many years.

The outcome will be a great loss on both sides as there are many, myself included, who will have nothing to do with certain social media.

I have been giving this some thought and one of my problems,in this, is that I know nothing whatever of how the forum is run, what it involves and especially, what it costs. Some others have mentioned financial donations and it has occurred to me, could the technical side be "farmed out" to a specialist firm, for a suitable fee?

In this case we would be talking of a members' subscription fee but unless this were small it might frighten off those members who enjoy reading it but rarely, if ever, post on it. It has occurred to me for some time now that although there are lots of members there is only a fairly small cadre of those of us who post regularly and thus animate the discussions, whilst also getting "full value" out of the forum. I haven't counted heads but I would guess there are well less than 50 of us.

The RNLI have a system of normal membership at  small flat rate subscription. If you want to donate more, at a set rate, they call you a "governor" and you get a few privileges such as a magazine, and a discount off sale items. If want to make a single donation, at a much higher rate, they call you a "life governor".

We can donate now if we wish, and I made a donation at last year's spring meet. The amount I gave was the same as I pay to subscribe to a monthly modelling magazine. As I get 10 times more value out of this forum, than the magazine, I reckoned that was very good value!

At least we have time as Jonzo's standing down is not immediate and I have great faith in our moderating team to come up with a good solution for us. These are just my thoughts in case they may be of help.

Meantime, as they say in the Army - "Steady, the Buffs!"

Gracie some of our Victorian ancestors believed a man or woman's personality and psychological problems could be 'divined' through the shape of the head and the ridges and furrows upon it. The 'art' of Phrenology.Hence the phrase 'he needs his bumps felt' often used in reference to executive members of the BA.

Sir Terry Pratchett posited the notion that if you could 'diagnose' a mental condition through the 'lumps' you could cure the condition by the application of a hammer to produce reduce or produce the lumps as required for a more amenable character. Retrophrenology.

Although I'm unsure of the benefits of a smack on the head with a hammer I'm more than willing to test it out on various persons ministerial and presidential. I've also been designing a new 'procedure' which I've christened the 'Quango Bango'.

It has been suggested that we consider changing to being a Facebook Group, but apart from alienating many of our members, that would mean losing so much of what NBN has.

Too right, if you went Facebook only, I'd be gone like a shot.

I agree this Forum must stay in the same format.

As well as being a great source of information it also very much lives up to its reputation as The Friendly Forum.

I do have Facebook but gave up trying to use it some time ago as the advertising has now got so intrusive that it makes the site almost impossible to use at times.

Facebook, unless it's just me, fails to provide the community and sense of belonging that a forum does. NBN provides a fair balance between pleasant chatter and the serious stuff. The core membership excludes no one yet manages to remain as a group of friends, I like that in a forum. Buggered if I know what I'd do with myself if NBN became Facebook only, I agree with Arthur about Facebook but it is also the hidden replies that annoy me.  I say hidden, but very often replies have to be sought thus might be missed by others, if that makes sense. I have looked at the NBN Facebook page, not that well populated or used, that must tell us something.

Also for use by frustrated IT technicians wishing to fix female computers, e.g. awquad ones.

I wouldn't want to see the NBN as 'just' a FaceTube Group. But I have to say I don't see the NBN as a 'forum' either. I see it as much more.

To me the NBN is a club. Myself and quite a few members actually refer to the NBN as 'The Boat Club'. I think of the NBN in the same way that I think of any yachting club, be it Royal or otherwise. To be honest I think the NBN is better than the majority of yacht and boat clubs...being open to hirers, owners, sailors, cruisers, caravanners, canoeists, walkers, cyclists, basically everyone...we get a better class of member at the NBN!

Above all we try to be open. Be that in membership or in what we are discussing. OK we can get heated at times...but here on the forum as well as out in the political landscape of the Broads the club, to the best of its ability applies checks and balances to maintain our openness.

One thing that Iain Broadscot taught us all I think...we are close, we are the friendly forum, we are welcoming, we are friends, we are almost family. This attitude is part of The Broads as a whole really. On the Broads I have made firm and fast friends. The same goes for this forum. No matter what social or political persuasion you come from, if you ask a question it will be answered, and if you need help and support...it is offered.

To me, and I hope to others, the 'forum' is just one small aspect of being a member of the NBN Club. The benefits of my membership of this club are quite profound really. I have access to vast repository on boating and Broadland knowledge. From local and personal history to some complex mechanics and boat building techniques. (Members may not realise but even our little discussions on Broadland history have sparked interaction with post graduates students in universities in Paris and Ghent who came seeking advice).

There have even been some financial benefits to being an NBN member. Discounts from the business that support us have saved me almost £800 over 2016.

Most important of all has been the social aspect of being a member. I'm part of a group of people who, just like me, are passionate about the Broads and all of its aspects. I've walked through Wroxham wearing my NBN shirt and complete strangers have stopped to talk and from there become friends, because they recognised the logo on the shirt. The Broads is a community...locals, frequent visitors, and holiday makers and the NBN is an integral part of that community. To put it quite frankly not only do our members visit the Broads...some of them bloody live there!

So what would I like to see the NBN do in the future? I would like to continue our philosophy of 'open to all'. I would like to see the forum retained but I would like to see the NBN 'get out there' and get involved sort of 'not what can we get out of The Broads but what can we do for the Broads'. I think getting involved more...shaking a few buckets to raise funds for a Broads Project, physically lending a hand, getting stuck in would not only benefit the Broads but would benefit the NBN Club too.

See? There it was again. The NBN Club. The Club that cares. Sorry if I overstepped the mark but that's how I feel. Right I'm off for a lie down and to put some water in this drink!

Love the Broads?

Join the NBN.

The Heart of the Broads!
