My friends and I are going to spend four days on the broads in June. We start from Stalham. The 6 of us are clueless and we are in the process of getting ideas together for:

1) Good places to visit.

2) Recommended pubs.

3) Any Norfolk events taking place betwee 15th -18th June.

4) Recommended course fishing spots.

Any advice for a bunch of northern 30 something year olds would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

I will leave pubs to others who are better versed in drinking than I am but for 'eats' I recommend the Wayford Bridge Hotel for the finest dining on the Broads and the bacon butty van outside Lathems at Potter Heigham if you are starvin!

Fishing spots...all depends on the species. Upper reaches of the Ant...some superb rudd and roach. Lower reaches there are some fine perch. Bream, I head for the Thurne and Bure...some really nice roach too. Tench...back on the Ant again between Wayford and the turn for Stalham. Salhouse is excellent fishing particularly bream and perch.

Dear all, thank you for the advice posted above.

We would be looking for pubs that do good home cooked food along with good local ales.

Also with the time of year ( football world cup) we will need pubs on the radar that are having the football on.

Thanks again to you all.

I can't help out with the fishing but our favourite pubs on the Northern Broads are:

White Horse, Neatishead (sadly out of reach now as RB can't get under Ludham Bridge ?)

The Dog, Ludham Bridge

The Maltsters, Ranworth

The Lion, Thurne (run by the same guy as the White Horse)

Good grub at all of them ?

If it's nookey that you are after then inevitably head for the fleshpots of Gt Yarmouth ?

And on to really serious matters, maggots. On one day reds will outfish whites and on another it will be the other way round, Broads fish are fickle beggers so best buy some of each.

Just take it easy and have fun. As long as you respect the rivers and other river users you will get loads of help and advice a long the way if you need it, probably have the best time which will result in you hiring again and again until you eventually buy your own boat. That's what happened to most of this motely crew on here :default_biggrin:

A very warm welcome aboard our forum from me

Have a smashing time

Grace

Remember if you are fishing, this broads regulation applies.

Broads regulation 29

1) Subject to paragraph (2) no person shall conduct any fishing or any associated activity from a power-driven or sailing vessel which is underway or cause or permit any net or fishing line to hang from such a vessel into the water whilst the vessel is underway.
(2) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to a vessel which is:
(a) engaged in the handling of licensed eel nets; or
(b) under the control of the National Rivers Authority in connection with its fishery duties.
(3) Any person fishing from a boat or the bank shall show reasonable consideration to any other person using the navigation area and shall ensure that his rod or line does not obstruct the passage of a vessel along a channel.

Welcome John,

For good local ale you can't beat The Fur and Feather at Woodbastwick, 20mins walk from Salhouse Broad.

They have their own brewery and loads of fresh ales to try.

No footie there mind, and the food could be seen as a tad dear.

Have a great time.

Thanks again to you all for the great welcome and suggestions above. I had to laugh at Jenny's post above - "fleshpots of G Yarmouth."

My friends and I are all looking forward to exploring what we hear is a beautiful place.

Best wishes,

The Broads are beautiful, not so sure about Yarmouth though! Enjoy yourselves.

Pubs and fishing is my Broads specialist subjects :default_icon_mrgreen:

The fishing is usually good wherever you are. If you have a reasonable knowledge of fishing, then you can't go wrong really. All local fishing tackle shops are more than happy to pass on any hot spots or best bait..

The Kings arms at Womak water is a great pub, 10 minute from the moorings.Stalham is often overlooked, but has a few pubs and eateries, Richardsons yard have a few nice spots for mooring. S Walsham broad has quite moorings and the pub is a good 15 minute hike along a path.

If you pass a pub and it's open , you must stop, that is a rule of the broads, sometimes they are giving the stuff away for free :default_icon_e_ugeek:

You can't go wrong, as Gracie said, take it easy, and you will have the best time ever.  Look forward to hearing and seeing all about it.:default_winko:

Don’t forget the fishing season doesn’t start until the 16th June this year.

. . . . . . . . and every year! Long may that continue. There is a lake/pit in the Potter Heigham area that allows year round angling I believe.

Some of the above posts seem to assume that this may be an all male party. I don't fully know the details but some hire companies have recently refused to hire to these I understand. I don't know if you need to check to avoid problems at the time. It's just me being a pessimist! Really hope you all have a great time and welcome to the forum.
