My Day

Hard morning walking from North Gap to Waxham and back. About 4 miles but the sand was really soft making it hard work. It was starting to get busy at Palling on my way back.20190703_112656.thumb.jpg.69fa8b39ffe0fabfdae105dc00969dd2.jpg20190703_120235.thumb.jpg.857bbcd5ab57383a11ddbf9a0e7ab4d2.jpg20190703_112646.thumb.jpg.e4efd2e9313d90226973cd389c69be5b.jpg

Lovely photos Chris, We've never been to Palling although we've been told it's beautiful and it certainly looks it. If we fancy a day by the sea we tend to head for  Gorleston which always makes me think we've stumbled into a time warp as it's exactly like all the seaside resorts I remember visiting as a child with my parents and gives  the impression that it has remained unchanged in decades. The walk along the beach as far as the beachside café is quite  far enough for me to walk as I'm by no means a keen walker. If I tell you that Tony says that my feet are only there to stop my ankles from fraying and not for any other purpose you'll get the picture!

Well mid week 15 mile run today and as it was a sunny 24°C miles 9 to 12 took me along Chesterfield Canal, so as I prodded slowly along I tried to get a few pictures in case anyone is interested or if anyone has previously been along here.

Sorry they aren't fantastic but I was running and couldn't get a photo over the top of the bank a lot of the time, and as always, I went a little overboard :default_biggrin:

I joined the canal at Station Road Bridge in Brimington and proceeded past Wheeldon Mill Lock

I walked from Palling to North Gap but this time had my bins to view the Little Tern Colony. I have never seen so many at this location! 200 breeding pairs. But they say there are virtually zero at Winterton due to too many uncontrolled dogs, so maybe they have come up here.

Photos not very good, I needed to be closer but I was wearing a new navy travel vest and my best Tilley. If you fancy viewing wear an old hat and top they were dive bombing relentlessly.

Hi Chris, the Winterton colony was non existent from the start this year, early arrivals moving on to further north to breed.

Some few late arrivals did nest but I understand these were outside the fenced area. The rspb painted numbers on rocks next to each one and they were subsequently stolen.

There is quite an odd atmosphere in Winterton each year with large amounts of warnings and resources being put into efforts to stop dog incursions into nesting areas, up to and including electric fences, yet I have never heard of a single incident of dogs scaring birds or taking chicks. It seems to be a case of accepted wisdom with no evidence.

There is natural predation you would expect at such a location but dog owners are both aware and careful not to allow or cause problems for the colony.

The rspb teams arrive each year like a military operation and focus almost exclusively on a dog problem that doesn't exist! It's all quite strange!

my day today, a normal start at work, then on to team building, we were given a location to get to at a set time, Piccadilly circus, from there we found we would be doing the crystal maze, several hours later (and a lot of fun, - i got both the crystals for the tasks i did and our team (of the 3 from work) were the winners - even managing to get on the high score leader board in 11th for this week with 321 gold tickets from the dome (200 more than either of our rival teams) we had got 8 crystals from our 16 games, afterwards a quick half in the bar, and then it was time to head home (well back to the car parked at a colleagues house then home. great fun, excellent team building

And then reaching the Hollongwood Hub with Katey and her coffee shop and Hollingwood Lock House which is the sole remaining lock house on this stretch of the canal. It is unique as a railway built lock house.

Hello Jay,

Thank you for up to date photos of my old stamping ground, when the boys were quite young we used to go to the canal to work on restoration as a family every Sunday. Hopefully it will be connected to the rest of the canal at the other end of the tunnel and onto Worksop.

 Regards

Alan

No problem Alan, I'm glad I could update you and hopefully bring you some happy memories of the canal, if it ever gets finished, I'll be one of the first to have an exploration of it :default_biggrin:

Surlingham broad after a lovely meal at the ferry, perfect Friday evening after the usual week of chaos

Well back home now reflecting on a brill day/night aboard Stardust. Feel the need to mention and thank the kind gent who helped us moor up at the ferry. My wife had been talking the procedure through with me on our way up the river, she seemed quite confident about stepping off while I was at the wheel........until we approached the mooring and she realised the deck was around four feet above the beer garden! I CANT DO IT! She announced slightly panicked about 10ft away. No need to worry, the boating community are never far away 👍🏼 Awesome

This is exactly why I’m at the helm when we moor so hubby can step off and handle the ropes. He’s far more sure footed than me!

Glad it all worked out ok.

Our weekend. Got up to the boat mid afternoon on Friday . Decided to relax, have a nice meal at the New Inn and prepare for a day of painting the boat on Saturday after seeing the weather would be nice.  Woke up to a dead fridge. It was original to the boat from the 1970’s.  Finally admitted defeat with the thing and spent a fortune on a new one although it was in a sale so I suppose it was a ‘bargain’.  New fridge installed and a very much lighter wallet, then it rained so no painting.

Sunday - woke up to glorious sunshine. Delved around in the dark depths of a storage area and found some canvas door covers. Arghhhh we had just paid out for new ones, then I had a bright idea. They fit across the screen and we want a screen cover. Contacted Polly and had a lovely Facetime conversation as we discussed the possibilities of adapting the covers to a windscreen cover. Looks possible, thank you Polly! X   Finally we painted. Still got the sides and decks to go but progress has been made.

Cracking paint job, very nicely done :1310_thumbsup_tone1:

As for the fridge, I guess it was always going to give up the ghost one day and maybe if it was next year the price would have gone up and it wouldn't be on sale!

Silver linings aren't always easy to find :12_slight_smile:

I just want to make it very clear that this is a team effort with Selsie! I do the rollering on and he does the flatting off (is that the correct term?) and clearing up the drips I’ve made!   This was from a while ago. Janet Anne is a great teacher
