Saturday: Drove to local airfield giving 2 14yr-olds a lift (they recently joined the club).  Specialist sailplace weather forecast predicted quite good soaring weather over Northern Germany but you can never be certain if they smoked the right stuff.

Got trailer out of garage & assembled sailplane.  Checked everything, selected same task (511km) as on previous Monday & took off at 11am.  Departing to the North taking care not to infringe on Hamburg airport airspace, up North to the first turnpoint then course Southeast to an Autobahn exit in former East Germany.  Having navigated around Lübeck airspace we ran out of clouds - had to "park" until the sky developed - then off to the 2nd turn point & then Southwest across the river Elbe and to the 3rd TP on the Autobahn just North of Hannover.  At this point it was getting a bit murky & the easterly wind was freshning.

Now just the remaining 100kms or so in Northerly direction home which was quite a struggle due to not all clouds "working".  Finally the navigation system said I was on "final glide" home but it tends to be a bit optimistic & the margin melted away.  Finally managed to add about 100m altitude over Stade airfield which gave sufficient margin to glide across the river Elbe and home.  Had some difficulty getting out of the cockpit after 7 1/4 hours in there!

Flight took 3/4 hour longer than same task did the previous Monday.  Our CFI (flies same plane type as I do) just managed 600kms but hes younger...

Lying here in my bunk, enjoying being cool after the heat yesterday. Relaxing to the sound of rain on the roof, dozing on and off, when suddenly I have a thought! It's been raining a couple of hours... Why haven't I heard the bilge pump! Time to get up and have a look!

Once they get deep enough under water you can't hear them running any more :default_biggrin:

Lovely overnight wild mooring on Womack. This morning a boat passed us with enough speed to pull our forward rhond anchor out, The stern held leaving us swung out blocking half the river.

No damage to boat, rhond anchor securing ring opened up!

Hey ho, didn't get boat name or number so just moving on and putting it down to "one of those things"

Hi Kev, thanks for asking, she is doing quite well generally although not the dog she was. But most importantly she is OK on the boat. I bought a wooden dog ramp which extends by sliding the middle out for different heights of mooring, made a few modifications to give her confidence and stop her falling off the sides and she uses it bless, quite a leap of faith when you think about it!

Yesterday would have been Tan's 62 Birthday, we as a family had a celebration barbi for family and friends at Stuart's house which is a couple of roads below our road.

It was cooler yesterday but at least there was no rain. A good time was had by all in their garden with Stuart doing the barbi, I had spent Saturday morning making cheese scones, cheese tartlets and a large chocolate cake, caramel and apple pie and a strawberry and blackberry flan. Joanne did all the other food.

A good time was had by all from 2.00pm until 10.30pm with tales from the past.

Regards

Alan

my day, (well most of my weekend really) was spent doing astronomy, we had to show 850 guides (over 2 days) Mars and the sun, for mars (and as it was daytime and mars is now round behind the sun) we took an image one of our local astronomers had taken and fixed it to a tree some 30 yards from where we set up, we then had a telescope focussed on this  so the brownies and guides could look at the planet. we had a telescope projecting an image of the sun onto a sheet of paper (this was very popular as we also showed what would happen to your eye should you look at the sun through a telescope, it was here that we realised all brownies and guides must be pyromaniacs as they instantly went and found leaves to set fire to when they saw this.

saturday was very hot and sunday a bit cooler (with cloud, not helping the solar observing) though we were lucky to keep the girls attention on the telescopes as a naked protest bicycle ride went past at one point.

an enjoyable couple of days teaching the young ladies about mars as part of a much bigger guide event, but well worth the effort if they have learned just one thing from it all.

Recently spent a few days in Scotland visiting our daughter. Went out for dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Clyde. The scenery is stunning up there. Lovely few days then followed the heat back again to England on Saturday leaving torrential rain and thunderstorms behind in Scotland

I have wondered from time to time how you are faring Alan. The first one of everything must be hard. Glad that you celebrated and remembered Tan’s birthday this way.

Hello Alan

I'm so glad you got to celebrate your Tan's birthday with family and friends. I bet it was a day of remembering your lady in happy  times, did you tell everyone how she used to sit happily helming all day not allowing you anywhere near the helm until one of those ruddy flappy things came along :default_biggrin:

All the best Alan

Hi Grace,

The helming went without saying, it used to give me time to do the odd repair job or catching up on my tan.

I am back on Ranworth Breeze on the 23rd July, hopefully some friends are coming to stay, but I do have a new owner to train and also someone is visiting the boat with the prospect of buying into the Ranworth Breeze family.

Regards

Alan

That photo of the titan crane is impressive although it doesn't quite get over the sheer size of the thing. Its a lonely and sad reminder of the once thriving Upper Clyde Ship Builders like John Brown. Think Lusitania,  Queen's Elizabeth and Mary and QE2 plus Hood and Repulse. Impressive history.

Liz, our day last Sunday.

Got up to glorious sunshine in Salhouse.

Ate breakfast of champions, set off up the Ant and saw TWO SWALLOWTAIL flutterbyes

We thought of you and were very chuffed with ourselves.

Back in CH now planning our escape

Thanks for that it is only when you look at the buildings, 5 storey? And the height of the masts on some sizeable yachts that you appreciate the true perspective and the size of the crane.
