Timbo
My good shoes finally gave up the ghost two years ago. To celebrate my first paycheck from a 'proper job', as in salaried, I bought a tailormade suit and a pair of handmade shoes. The suit...what can I say? I went from a 32" waist to a 38" one. Why on earth would I want to spend time and money in a gym to gain six tiny muscles in the stomach, when I can have ONE BIG ONE! The shoes, however, have lasted just over twenty years. When I first took them to our local cobbler to be reheeled and soled he refused to take payment as it was a 'privilege to be allowed to work on them' and has never asked for money since. I'm not talking cheap tat like Louboutin here! We are talking a pair of chisel toed George Cleverley's that set me back a grand and a half in the early 1990's. Can anyone imagine Uncle Albert's reaction, when he found out, to me spending that amount of money on shoes? But now in the past two years, I've worked out just how much money I saved by buying those shoes. I go through shoes at a fast rate of knots because of the way I walk and the amount of walking I do. In a year I go through six pairs of Clarke's shoes and two pairs of safety boots. On average that's £740 a year on footwear. So over twenty years that's £14,800 compared to my Cleverley's at £1500? Cleverley's...smart in more ways than one!

If I could live in trainers that would suit me fine ... and actually, come to think of it, you never see slippers with stiletto heels ... so I rest my case.

grendel
surely heels like that would puncture the water bed. If any of you think getting shoes is easy, try getting them in size 14, choice - well they might have a pair. I do have a couple of posh pairs - oxfords and brogues - straight from India, very well made shoes too at a reasonable price, other than that its trainers. I did get some czech army baseball boots. last time I found a whole bundle of shoes in my size, I bought all the ones they had - 6 pairs, when a pair wears out I get a new pair from my stash. my nephew on the other hand takes size 16. when he was in the army he had special permission to wear trainers on parade as it took nearly 3 months to get his boots built - uppers from italy soles from america, built by the army outfitters in London.

Wyndham
Well this is as good a place as any to tell this story, except it's not a story, it happened The ever fragrant Mrs W and I were having a wander in the home of the newly crowned champions of county cricket ( take that Yorkies ) and she blurts out.......... "I think I have a heel fetish"........ My heart beat raise....... turns out she was referring to the state of the lady in front of us who had paid no attention to foot care since birth, dirty crusty heels, she said. Is she a tad oversensitive? They were horrible though.
Polly
After my last sailing week we were on our way home and took a break at a new 'retail park' about 20 mins from home. I wanted to ditch the trainers I had finally rendered as too scruffy that week, so we pottered about looking for replacements. Whether it was post holiday madness or not I don't know but I ended up with a secret wish fulfilled....bright red Converse All Stars. Phill kindly bought them for me and they cheer me up no end. 2
