First Photo

So here is my first photo taken on the first holiday from which my love of the Broads and boating began. It discounts a family holiday back in the 90s and a stay in a lodge by the river in 2008. Plus the many holidays spent in Norfolk over the years. This was the first week afloat for my husband and I as a couple in 2012.

Well done petersjoy. It was indeed Bramerton. We hired from Swancraft in Brundall and headed there for our first night, a Saturday in the middle of June. A lovely couple on a private boat helped us to come in to moor. I was so relieved to get safely moored. 

The next day we headed for Reedham and found plenty of mooring space on a Sunday afternoon. On the Monday morning when we left, again it was a couple of owners who advised me how to reverse out. A lot of valuable lessons learned on that trip. 

Anyone else got any first mooring or photo memories?

We used to hire from Silverline, often our last night was spent  at Bramerton.There used to be lots  of ducks there.Not seen that many there in recent  years.The ducks were quite  funny.One used to have a fairly  bad limp.Another one used to like a chat and would sit close to the boat chatting away.

It spurred me to search out our first Broads photo.

In July 2015 we hired Wood Violet from Hunters Yard. My eldest son joined us, and we had our dog, Marvin, with us (he sadly died the following Spring, shortly after our first motor-cruiser experience on the Broads). The photo above was taken just after we had been shown to the boat and before we loaded our stuff on board.

The first day was scorching hot, and after we had been 'shown the ropes' we had a beautiful sail up to Potter H and through the bridge. We were blessed with beginner's luck as we hadn't checked the tides, but luckily got under the bridge without difficulty, especially considering it was Harry's first go at quanting, and then had a wonderful sail up to Hickling Broad. The magic of the Broads kicked in. All I could hear was the creak of our ropes, water under our keel, wind in the reeds and bird song. Wonderful! We reached the end of Hickling Broad just as the wind was dying, where we mud-weighted...brilliant timing (again beginner's luck). It was the most beautiful, warm summer's evening. Ah! Bliss!

...and we did light the gimble lamps!

A little tip if your making rabbit pie ,keep the ears helps to keep the pie up.

Possibly, or maybe a case of not having spent too much time lost in trying to read everything and plan everything. I was certainly glad that we did the southern rivers before engaging with social media. We had no real issues but I might have been put off if I had read all those tales of tides and currents and ropes and ... dragons!!

Your comment made me giggle Jean, especially as nowadays I go completely overboard in planning and make sure we have a chart of the tides for the week with us. On the other hand...we were advised not to go beyond Acle bridge on the Hunters boats due to the lack of an engine.

I did laugh that the first photo I took was a rabbit not a boat!! 

So here is the second photo. You can see that the pub was still the Woods End back then.

We always loved to see the rabbits at Bramerton at dusk or early morning.

Definately, I'd recognise that anytime, the only thing missing is the sailing club going in ever decreasing circles..
